Overview

Sound Carpet Repair is a website concept for an independent carpet restretching and precision repair business serving Tacoma, University Place, Lakewood, Puyallup, Gig Harbor and Bonney Lake. It covers power restretching, seam repair, patch and burn repair, pet damage restoration and transition and threshold repair.

The design combines clear service pages, interactive proof, transparent pricing guidance and local-search structure into one customer journey for homeowners, landlords and property managers.

The challenge

Most people assume a rippled or damaged carpet has to be replaced, so a repair business first has to win an argument: that restretching works, that it is cheaper and that it lasts. A page of service descriptions rarely wins it.

The goal was a website that shows the repair instead of describing it, then makes the cost and the next step equally clear.

Design direction and visual identity

The identity is a luxury craftsman look: deep navy panels, a copper accent and plenty of white space, with Playfair Display serif headlines for authority and Outfit and Inter sans-serif for body copy and interface text. Content sits in a wide 1380px container that keeps long comparisons and the map readable on large screens.

Colour, type and spacing are defined once as design tokens in custom CSS and reused across the homepage, service pages, area pages, gallery, calculator and supporting pages, so the whole site reads as one brand at mobile, tablet and desktop widths.

Website architecture and customer journey

The site is organised around the questions a homeowner asks, and it runs as 20 routes in a single-page React application. Every entry point leads to the same few steps: see the repair, understand why it works, get a price range, book an inspection.

  • Homepage with a hero slider, symptom guide, tension simulator, savings chart, calculator and map
  • Five service pages, one per repair type
  • Service-area directory with six local pages
  • Case-study gallery, pricing calculator, FAQ, about and contact pages

Key features and interactive tools

What the website does

Interactive before and after sliders

Each repair type (wave restretching, seam thermo-welding, pet damage and threshold transitions) is shown with a before and after pair of photographs that are aligned frame for frame, so dragging the handle reveals only the repair and nothing else moving in the picture. The sliders sit in the homepage hero and in the project gallery. The photography is illustrative stock imagery, not completed customer jobs, and the site labels it that way.

Carpet tension and physics simulator

A visitor drags a tension control from 0 to 80 lbs and watches a cross-section of carpet, cushion and tack strip go from a loose ripple to drum-tight, with the mechanical reasoning behind a power stretch explained alongside. It turns "restretch, don't replace" from a claim into something the visitor can see for themselves.

Economics and cost-savings chart

An interactive bar chart compares restretching with full replacement by number of rooms, showing the cost difference, the time on site and the synthetic material kept out of landfill. The figures are illustrative guidance written for the concept, not verified local market prices.

Transparent multi-room pricing calculator

Visitors choose rooms, ripple severity and optional repairs, and an indicative price range updates instantly, with a 12 percent multi-room discount applied to the additional rooms. The result carries into the estimate request. The tool says plainly that the range is guidance and that the final price is confirmed on site.

Interactive service-area map

A Leaflet map of Tacoma, University Place, Lakewood, Puyallup, Gig Harbor and Bonney Lake uses custom pins and popups, and each location opens its own area page with local detail. It doubles as the structure for local search.

Service assistant

A chat assistant beside every page answers common questions, points visitors to the right service and hands them to the calculator or an inspection request. It works from predefined, rule-based responses and contextual actions. It is not connected to a live AI model or to a support team.

Responsive design

Layouts adapt across desktop, tablet and mobile: navigation moves into a drawer, comparisons and the calculator stack into single columns, the map and sliders resize, and a persistent call and chat bar keeps the main actions in reach on phones.

The site was checked at desktop and phone widths while it was built. It has not been through an exhaustive device test.

Design and development decisions

  • Show the repair first: sliders and the simulator come before the sales copy.
  • Interactive pricing is guidance, never a quote, and says so.
  • One set of tokens and components drives every page template.
  • Imagery and figures are labelled as illustrative wherever they appear.
  • Page structure is simple enough to move into a WordPress theme with templates and components.

Services demonstrated

  • Custom Theme Development
  • Responsive Web Design
  • Local SEO Structure
  • Interactive Cost Estimator
  • AI-Style Service Assistant

Built with React, TypeScript, Vite, React Router and Leaflet, in custom CSS.

Final outcome and capabilities demonstrated

The result is a complete local-service website: proof-led service pages, tools that let visitors test the repair and the price themselves, and a service-area structure ready for local search.

It shows what I build when I take a service business from a blank page to a finished customer experience. This is a self-initiated portfolio project. The business is fictional, so there are no client results, testimonials or analytics to report, and none are implied.
