Al Qalam
A Pakistani destination for fountain pens and writing accessories. The Shopify store is brand-first (Parker, Pilot, Lamy, Jinhao), in a gold identity, with technical filters for nib grade, pen tip design and packaging.

Project overview
Al Qalam sells writing instruments and accessories to Pakistani customers who care about the object: entry-level Jinhao pens from about Rs.950, Lamy Safari pens from Rs.7,999, Pilot and Parker pens in the tens of thousands, and Urushi-finished Pilot Custom pens at Rs.182,000. Inks, cartridges and converters are sold alongside for existing pen owners.
Business requirements
Pen buyers usually start from a brand or a pen model, then narrow by nib size, finish and colour. The store therefore needs strong brand navigation, filters for technical attributes such as nib grade and pen tip design, and variant selectors that handle many options cleanly. It also has to show stock honestly, since limited and high-value pens sell out; the site marks them Sold out instead of hiding them.
Visual direction
The identity is built on a warm gold: a mustard-gold header with the Al Qalam calligraphic wordmark, gold buttons and gold outlines on the cards, set against a clean white body. Hero banners are full-width, studio-lit product campaigns on gradient backgrounds, and product photography uses plain light backdrops so the pens' finishes and metal trims stand out. The typography is light and unfussy, which keeps attention on the objects.
Store experience
The brand menu is the main route into the catalogue, with Shop by Brands and Shop By Categories providing a second route by type. The homepage repeats this as brand rows with a View all button, so a visitor can browse Jinhao, Pilot, Lamy or Parker without opening a menu. Collection pages use a technical filter sidebar and Choose options buttons for products with variants such as nib size and packaging.
Responsive experience
On a phone the header collapses to a menu button with the Al Qalam wordmark centred between search and cart, the hero banner is re-cut for a portrait screen, and product cards drop to two across with the same gold-outlined buttons. Captured at 1440 px and 440 px wide for this case study.
Design highlights
The distinctive strength is how well the store suits a collector-style catalogue: brand-first navigation, precise filters (nib grade, pen tip design, packaging) and honest sold-out states, wrapped in a restrained gold identity that matches the product category.
